Random Connections--Bring Your Own Broadband – revisited
This afternoon I checked my phone and saw that Verizon was pushing out an update to the operating system. I was excited! I knew that the update would take me from Android 2.1 to version 2.2. That also meant that I would get the components to allow the phone to act as a wifi hub.
Sure enough, the phone went through its routine and downloaded all the updates. When it restarted there was a new app for a 3G hot spot and tethering. I went through the steps to set up SSID and security, but when I actually tried to run the app it told me that it would have to be activated at Verizon. Uh oh.
I logged onto Verizon’s website and found out that it would be an additional $20 per month for data tethering, above the $29 per month we were already paying for the data plan.
I was worried. I had really made use of the data tethering while out in Washington State, and I wasn’t happy that it might be going away. So, the first thing I did was fire up EasyTether on my phone, connect via USB, then run the corresponding app on my laptop. It connected, and I could still use my phone’s 3G signal to access the Internet from my laptop. I was breathing easier.
I would have liked the hot spot capability, but not at the additional cost. I can live with having to cable my phone to the laptop when I need a connection. It’s not that bad and it keeps the phone charged. I’m just hoping that Verizon doesn’t wise up to this and start cracking down on extraneous tethering. If Verizon can find some way to lock it down and charge you more for it, I’m sure they will. I really don’t want to jail break my phone if I can avoid it. We’ll see.

Rev. Rickert - A Lutheran in SC--Gregory the Great
Friday after Pentecost 14
Commemoration of Gregory the Great, Pastor
September 3, 2010
The Lord be with you
September 3 is set aside to remember Gregory the Great on our Church Calendar. One of the great leaders in Europe at the close of the sixth century, Gregory served in both the secular and sacred arenas of his era. As mayor of Rome, he restored economic vitality to his native city, which had been weakened by enemy invasions, pillage, and plague. After he sold his extensive properties and donated the proceeds to help the poor, he entered into full-time service in the Church. On September 3, 590, Gregory was elected to lead the Church in Rome. As bishop of Rome, he oversaw changes and growth in the areas of church music and liturgical development, missionary outreach to northern Europe, and the establishment of a Church year calendar still used by many church bodies in the Western world today. His book on pastoral care became a standard until the twentieth century.
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor John Rickert
Random Entertainment--THE RETURN OF CHRIS BROWN
Chris Brown returns to the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the first time since 2006, as "Deuces" jumps from No. 2 to No. 1 this week.
Hitting the top in just its ninth week on the list, it ties for the year's fastest climb to No. 1. In April, Monica's "Everything to Me" also raced to the penthouse in just nine weeks.
"Deuces" (featuring Tyga and Kevin McCall ) is Brown's third No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs after his debut single "Run It!" in 2005 and the following year's "Say Goodbye." The latter reigned for six weeks, while "Run It!" spent two frames at the top.
Last month, Billboard reported that there was no official word from Jive, Brown's record label, as to when his fourth studio album will be released. The singer has tweeted that his next set may arrive in 2011 or sooner, possibly preceded by a mixtape. Brown's last album, 2009's "Graffiti," has sold 319,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Brown has been on a roll lately. In addition to his first No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in nearly four years, he's also co-starring in the film "Takers," which was the highest grossing film at the U.S. and Canada box office last weekend (Aug. 27-29). It earned $20.5 million in its opening three days. "Takers" is Brown's first foray into film since the November 2007 holiday release "This Christmas."
This week, Brown tweeted a missive to his followers regarding his current successes: "Life has turned around for me. I couldn't be more happier. Thanks to the fans."

Random Connections--Nifty Fifty Downtown
It was the “golden hour”, that time in late afternoon when the sunlight filters warmly at an angle covering everything with long, interesting shadows. I hadn’t been out shooting in awhile, so I grabbed my camera and headed downtown.
I parked in the Richardson Street lot behind Mast General Store. Normally on a Thursday night they have Downtown Alive and the place is hopping, but this evening it seemed to be dead. It could be that the series has just ended for the summer, but it could also be that construction in the area has disrupted civic activities.
I started out with my camera and the 18-200 zoom lens, and picked up my little SlikStick tripod to take with me. I had walked about two blocks and had taken only a few shots when I spotted that my battery was just about dead. Not good. I headed back to the car to pick up my spare.
Back at the car I made a quick decision. I swapped out my zoom lens, opting instead for my 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. With the faster lens I could leave my tripod behind and not have to lug it down the street. I also wanted to spend some time with this lens. I’m always shooting with the big zoom, so I thought it would be fun to try something different.
Nikon’s “nifty fifty” lens should be in every photographer’s kit. It’s inexpensive, costing only around $100. It’s sharp and fast. It’s also a good general range for shooting. However, with digital cameras that aren’t full frame (like my D50), the focal length is actually 1.5 times what the lens reads. The effective focal length for this lens on my DSLR, as opposed to a 35mm film camera or a full-frame camera, would be about 75mm, making it slightly telescopic.
There are two ways to shoot with a prime. You could just point and shoot quickly – the camera is fast enough and sharp enough so that it should focus quickly and capture your image. That can be kind of fun, because it’s random and you don’t really know what you’re going to get. I tried this for a bit, but didn’t get any images I felt like uploading to Flickr.
More typically, though, a prime lens is going to require more thought. You can’t just zoom to get the composition you want. You have to take a bit more time to compose the shot.
I found myself getting a bit frustrated, though. Sometimes the frame wasn’t quite wide enough, and I couldn’t back up enough to get the shot I wanted. This first one had the top part of the brick arch cropped because there just wasn’t room to back up.
However, the payoffs could be nice. With such a wide aperture I was able to play around with some depth of field. In these two shots, part of the fountain is in sharp focus, while others are blurred a bit.
One of my favorite places to wander downtown is the little alleyway known as Boggs Street. This runs parallel to South Main from River Place down to the Army-Navy Store. It’s mostly warehouse and storage, but there are so many interesting textures and photo opportunities there.
I played around with a bit of black and white processing, too.
Turns out that most of the evening’s action was down near the Peace Center. The Swinging Medallions were giving a concert in the amphitheater, and Clemson was also having some big shindig in the main hall. I wandered back up Main Street toward my car, stopping for a moment to listen to some street musicians jam.
All in all, it was a good evening out, and I got a few good shots with my 50mm. I need to do this more often.

Random Entertainment--JERMAINE DUPRI GET “PERSONAL” ON NEW MIXTAPE
Legendary producer/songwriter Jermaine Dupri addresses a few issues that's "personal" to him in this new joint "Take Me Away" ft Johnta Austin...off his soon to be released mixtape-I THINK I'M BERRY GORDY. When you listen, you can hear the Slick Rick "influence" in the producer's flow. JD takes the time to talk to truly express what I call "his right now feelings" about certain things...he speaks about bloggers (sandra rose) "trying to take u under" Dr. Conrad "killing" Michael...how "sex sells, records aint" & females getting paid for telling who they slept with. Putting his artist/singer/songwriter Johnta Austin on this track only enhanced the authenticity of the song. One thing I love about this record is JD starts it off by saying "Lifers let's talk for a second"...LIFERS is what Jermaine calls his followers...and if they getting this type of music out of him...other producers better get with this.
THE MIXTAPE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD ON 9/4/10...GET READY!!!!
